Volunteer FAQ's

What are the requirements to become a volunteer?

A desire to be part of our organization that assists older residents living safely and independently in their homes. We welcome all eligible residents to become volunteers of every race, color, gender identification, and cultural group. All volunteers fill out an application form, pass CORI background checks, and attend an orientation. Applications can be completed online or can be requested by calling 508-418-9220.

Do I need a computer (desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone) to be a volunteer?

Yes, volunteers receive a daily email listing services that have been requested by members. Volunteers access and use an online system to view these requests for services and sign up for those they want to fulfill.

How old do I have to be to become a volunteer?

A minimum age of 25 years.

Do I have to be a full-time resident of the Town of Barnstable to be a volunteer?

No, we have volunteers that are seasonal and/or part time residents.

We also accept volunteers from Sandwich and Mashpee as those towns do not have a program such as BN2N.

What are the geographical limits for driving members?

We do not provide transportation off Cape. We provide transportation to Cape Cod locations beyond the Town of Barnstable as long as the projected total time of service falls within our 2-hour guideline.

Do I have to commit to a minimum number of services or amount of time each week?

No, you sign up for services when they fit your schedule. You are not obligated to meet any criteria regarding the number of services.

I do not wish to drive members. Are there other ways I can help?

Yes, an important position is a Service Coordinator who takes service requests from members and enters them into the computer system. BN2N also has a Board of Directors and various committees including publicity, volunteers, and membership that are staffed by volunteers.

Do you provide medical transport?

To receive transportation services, a member must be able to get safely in and out of a volunteer’s personal vehicle with no/minimal assistance. If a member uses a wheelchair, they must be able to get in and out of the chair with no/minimal assistance. The wheelchair must be lightweight and foldable to fit into the volunteer’s vehicle.

We do not provide transportation for medical procedures that involve general anesthesia or conscious sedation.
